Obituary

Sarah Ann Winchester was born January 1, 1938, to Florance and Oni Galloway in Reidsville, NC. The youngest of six, Amos, Alice, Violet, Earl and AT, Sarah held the title of “Baby Sis.” As a New Year’s baby (the first child born in Reidsville in1938), Sarah would grow to illuminate the lives of many throughout her impactful life.

Sarah attended Reidsville High School but left early to embrace her new calling to motherhood. She and her childhood friend and forever sweetheart, Horse Daniel Winchester, welcomed their eldest child, Rita Hope Winchester-Murrell, and later became parents to Jerome Michael Winchester. Sarah was a baptized member of Jones Chapel Baptist church and remained a dedicated member until the very end. Over the years, she sang in the Mass Choir, Gospel Choir, Senior Choir, Deaconess and Trustee Wives Board, Nurses Board, was the Vice President of Pastor’s Aide ministry, Church Beautification, helped facilitate Sunday school and Vacation Bible School. However, her absolute favorite role was serving as a church greeter, where she would warmly tell everyone who arrived, "Welcome to your church!" Beyond her church walls, Sarah also volunteered in the community by registering individuals to vote.

Professionally Sarah worked at Burlington Mills and Fieldcrest as a seamstress. After retiring from Fieldcrest, she continued to stay active part-time as a Rockingham County Poll worker, Walmart greeter, and assistant at The Landings of Rockingham. Her infectious smile, humor, and unrelenting honesty made her a true fresh breath of air. She made everyone believe in themselves and never sweat the small stuff. It is also safe to say she never met a stranger. Sarah was also a member of the Beauty of Reidsville Chapter #477 Order of Eastern Star. While she was a wonderful wife and an excellent mother, it is almost as if God uniquely created her to be a grandmother; she was truly the best "GiGi" to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She could often be found sliding down slides, hiding in cabinets, dancing, singing, or simply cuddling with them.

Sarah leaves behind her daughter, Rita Hope Winchester-Murrell (Durham); her son, Jerome Michael Winchester (Cary); and a beloved sister-in-law, "Sis" Ruby Pinnix. She also leaves behind her four cherished grandchildren: Jessica Hope Murrell Berryman (Richard Crompton Berryman III, Durham), Jerome Michael Winchester Jr. (Greensboro), Nadiah Evette Winchester (Fayetteville), and Elijah Yanis Winchester; as well as four great-grandchildren whom she loved and adored: Kennedy Hope Berryman, Langston Olivia Berryman, Richard Crompton Berryman IV, and Christopher Michael Rashaun Winchester. She will also be dearly missed by a host of nieces, nephews, godchildren, and church members whom she loved dearly.
